Before Ibeyi were in Beyonce’s visual album (which was tackled in our podcast, 80-free to Infinity: Episode 1 | Lemonade), they’d wowed the world with the hauntingly beautiful single, “River”. At just 19-years-old, twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Díaz were following in their father’s footsteps. The late Latin jazz artist, Anga Díaz, was a Grammy-winning musician who was also part of the Bueno Vista Social Club. Ibeyi released “River”, a gospel song (surprisingly) that featured lyrics sang in English and Yoruba and combining musical elements from their diverse heritage including French, Afro-Cuban and Yoruba. In “River”, the sisters are dressed in white and immersed in water, as if being baptized, hair freely fanning out around them. Two figures who are out of sight alternatively raise each twin out of the water just long enough to sing their section of the song. The resulting video is utterly mesmerizing.
