Pan-African writers’ collective, Jalada Africa is producing some of the most electrifying new writing on the continent. With four major anthologies published to date, and recently, a Translation Issue featuring a fable by Ngugi wa Thing’o published in over 30 African languages—effectively making it the single most translated short story in the history of African writing—they’re certainly a group to watch.

Through Jalada Conversations, the collective speaks to exciting and respected writers on literature and writing. In this episode, Zimbabwean writer and Jalada Deputy Editor, Novuyo Tshuma speaks to award-winning Kenyan author, Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor about her critically acclaimed novel, Dust, at once poetic and visceral, that was shortlisted for the prestigious 2015 Folio Prize. They also tackle language, loss and how those memorable Dust characters came to be.
