Did you see the shape-shifting water spirit at the Blankets & Wine festival this past Sunday? No, I didn’t have too much to drink. The mythical spirit that is believed to inhabit the lochs of Scotland was printed on the canvas totes in the Sandstorm Kenya pop-up store.

The totes, which were shown for the first time at the music festival, are a collaboration between the Kenyan brand Sandstorm and Scottish surf brandStaunch. “You have to be a bit crazy to surf in Scotland,” Sandstorm Kenya CEO Mark Stephenson says of the South African graphic artist Will Beeslaar, who leads the surf brand and whom Mark met when he lived and worked in Scotland.

Staunch designed the print, which was then screen-printed on three different coloured canvases in three different colour ways in Karen by Dragonfly Designs. The canvas bags have leather straps with artisanal brass buckles cast in Rongai, an open and push pocket on the inside, and a zip to close.

Not only does safari meet surf with these bags but Mark believes they stem a new angle for the Kenyan brand, one that is “young, fun and energetic”.
